My big passion is finding ways to explain complex legal issues in a way that expands good quality discussion.

When we are empowered with the tools we need to participate, we can engage more meaningfully with law. We can vote for politicians who champion law reforms we support. We can scrutinise judges, prosecutors, and police officers constructively.

We can stop ourselves from being duped by pseudo-legal outrage-bait.

People with better understanding of legal concepts are also better self-advocates. We even know that some people do not even recognise when they have a legal problem and, as a result, never ask for legal help. Improving legal knowledge reduces unmet legal need.

Public Understanding of Law

I know I have done a good job when somebody can disagree with me rationally.

The heart of my work is improving rational disagreement. People have different priorities, interests, values, and needs.
Two well-informed, morally excellent people can disagree rationally when they are equipped to do so. 

My approach

I have significant expertise in:

  • National security law (especially telecommunications interception)

  • The law of speech acts (especially defamation law, censorship, and content regulation)

  • The law of politics (especially electoral law)

  • Residential tenancy law

  • Sentencing law

  • Police powers

I am also a methodologist, combining quantitative empirical research methods with doctrinal legal research skills.
